It isn’t rocket science to waive the banner of organic anything when it comes to food or drink, although many of us have become suspicious of what that really means and whether it is worth the higher cost. When it comes to wine, it seems the pros are really worthy of consideration. First, certified organic wine means that there are no pesticides or herbicides used in the process from growing to winemaking – something we would all love to avoid in anything we ingest.
Growers instead rely on nature (with their help) for pest and weed control, not a hard concept to understand when you think that for thousands of years farmers relied successfully on nature to be its own police, so to speak. Many scientists and growers believe that the advent of pesticides and herbicides increased, not decreased, the problems faced by growers today as these measures tend to interfere with nature’s balance. Organic wine means that you are avoiding those harmful pesticides and herbicides.
In addition, it appears that some of the after-effects (i.e. headaches) of drinking alcohol may be diminished by drinking organic wine as it does not contain additional sulfites – an additive that we should avoid in any event. Also, a very important consideration for many is the addition of sugar which some winemakers add to improve the wine’s taste and increase the alcohol content. Organic wine usually does not contain added sugar which means fewer calories – which translates to more enjoyment!
True sustainability, the ability to maintain a concern without depleting available resources when alternative resources are available, is a commitment whose rewards are all too evident. The benefits extend to the enterprise committed to sustainability as well as the environment and the planet – therefore to all of us. Wineries are especially well suited to take advantage of renewable energy by way of solar power as a resource for the energy needed to conduct their business.
The sun has always been a partner, in a manner of speaking, in producing the grape that is used to make the final delicious product. Why not utilize the sun’s energy beyond nurturing the soil and the vines and ensuring the ripening of the grapes? It makes perfect sense to incorporate this renewable power source into energy needs throughout the process from growth to production. Wineries throughout the world have begun to use this sustainable energy source to be both environmentally conscientious and to reign in the constantly increasing cost of production.
Solar panels are incorporated into the structure at the time of construction or added later to provide the means for tapping into the sun’s energy to generate the power needed for most of the operation. The winery stays connected to the grid for those times when the sun may not provide all the needed power. Overall there is a very substantial saving to winery owners and a huge appeal to a public becoming increasingly aware of our need to occupy our planet responsibly.
Climate change affects much of our planet as it disrupts nature’s routine – that built-in clock, so to speak, which we rely on to conduct certain activities such as the harvesting of nature’s bounty. No industry is more aware of the dramatic effects of the subtle, and the not so subtle, changes taking place throughout a calendar year more than the wine industry.
For thousands of years the timing of the vine’s maturity and the grape harvest were fairly predictable, but with climate change comes the need to monitor certain aspects of nature independently of a fixed calendar. At Chateau Trois Collines agricultural experts and winemakers are very much aware of these changes. They do not have to rely on the calendar to move from one phase of this delicate process to the next, but look to the vines themselves to know when the grapes are at their optimal ripeness and maturity.
Their expertise and sensitivity to the soil and the vines allows them to use their knowledge and instinct to gauge the necessary timing of each part of the process. Lebanese wines are a time-honored product, dating back thousands of years. There have been disruptions to be sure, but it seems that we always go back to our roots, so to speak. Our vineyards are one of the most beautiful sites in the country, from the topography to the growing vines. It was a poetic vision that brought us to this location, but it is our knowledge of the science of wine-making that has enabled us to bring you the most delicious wines available.
